Research context

Bremelanotide (PT-141) is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide analog of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH), structurally related to the earlier melanotropic peptide melanotan II. In vitro and in animal models it has been characterized as a non-selective agonist at melanocortin receptor subtypes, with reported binding at MC1R, MC3R, and MC4R, which are Gs-protein-coupled receptors linked to downstream cyclic AMP signaling.

Research in isolated cell systems has examined its receptor-binding profile and cyclic AMP accumulation across the melanocortin receptor family, while rodent-model studies have investigated central signaling associated with MC4R activation.
