Research context

L-Carnitine (levocarnitine) is a small quaternary ammonium compound biosynthetically derived from the amino acids lysine and methionine, existing as a zwitterion at physiological pH. In vitro and in animal models it has been characterized as a component of the carnitine shuttle, in which the carnitine palmitoyltransferase system (CPT1/CPT2) and carnitine-acylcarnitine translocase mediate transport of long-chain fatty acyl groups across the inner mitochondrial membrane.

Research in isolated cells, mitochondrial preparations, and rodent models has examined its role in acyl-group buffering, the enzyme kinetics of the CPT system, and cellular energy-substrate handling. Analytical quantification is commonly performed by HPLC, tandem mass spectrometry, and enzymatic assays.
