Research context

Glutathione (reduced, GSH) is a tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine, distinguished by a gamma-peptide linkage between glutamate and cysteine and a free cysteinyl thiol group. In vitro and in animal models it has been characterized as a principal intracellular redox buffer and as a co-substrate for glutathione peroxidases and glutathione S-transferases involved in the handling of reactive species and xenobiotics.

Research in isolated cells and rodent models has examined the GSH/GSSG redox couple, thiol-based enzyme kinetics, and conjugation reactions. Analytical characterization is commonly performed by HPLC with electrochemical or fluorescence detection, LC-MS/MS, and enzymatic recycling assays.
